If you
ever think of doing an African safari then Cape Town, the
oldest port in southern Africa, is regularly heralded as one
of the most beautiful cities on earth. The massive sandstone
bulk of Table Mountain, often draped in a flowing
"tablecloth" of clouds, forms an imposing backdrop to the
city while pristine, uncrowned beaches line the
cliff-hugging coast. Mountainous slopes sustaining the
world's most varied botanic kingdom (some 9,000 species
strong) overlook fertile valleys carpeted with vines, and
minutes from the city center you can taste an African safari
by spotting zebra and wildebeest grazing .
Cape
Town's unique setting means that it can be enjoyed from
various vantage points: Table Mountain and Lion's Head
provide breathtaking vistas over the Cape Town city bowl and
the Cape peninsula with its beautiful beaches; trips to
Robbin Island offer a dramatic sweep of scenery across to
Table bay. and harbor tours and old buildings await
exploration at the cosmopolitan Waterfront. Many scenic
routes meander along magnificent stretches of coastline and
inland terrain leading to special places like Cape Point,
the meeting place of the cold Benguela and warm Mozambique
currents, and Chapman’s Peak boasts one of the most
picturesque drives in the country.
It is a
city with four distinct seasons, each working its particular
magic on Cape Town and bringing with it a flood of
associations - summer and white sandy beaches, autumn's
crisp colors, the ferocity of stormy seas in winter, and
spring's show of Cape ‘fynbos’ flowers.
From
culture, history and scenery - to an unforgettable
experience. This is a special place with much to contribute
towards its growing reputation as a favored travel
destination.
Many who
come to Cape Town choose to just whip straight out from the
airport to the Winelands, where you can stay amid some of
the best-preserved examples of Cape Dutch architecture in
the area and sample award-winning wines. This is a great
area in which to base yourself if you're looking for a
relaxing, rural escape, with the bright lights of the city a
mere 60-minute drive away; the coastal town of Hermanus,
"capital" of the Whale Coast, a 70-minute drive away; and
the lakes, lagoons, and forests of the Garden Route an easy
4- to 5-hour drive along the N2.
Come and
enjoy this side during your African safari!
